It was in 2011 that Marcelo Lima, a Brazilian businessman, and Tony Smith, a former journalist and correspondent, got together to buy Quinta de Covela, once owned by filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira, but which had been abandoned for two years. The purchase was a dream come true for both of them. The previous team joined the challenge, including winemaker Rui Cunha and the desire to do more and better was more than visible.
Lima & Smith operates Quinta de Covela in the Vinho Verde region, in certified organic production, in an area (Baião) that is the birthplace of the Avesso variety, recognized for the quality of its whites and rosés.
A blend full of character with Avesso (the main one in the sub-region), Chardonnay and some more “spices” used by winemaker Rui Cunha, linked to the Covela project since 1992 and leading winemaker since 1998.
An expressive white. Floral with notes of tropical fruits and good intensity. But with interesting complexity thanks to the signs of the region’s granitic minerality.
Dry. Well balanced acidity. The typical minerality of the region is present. Although fresh and refreshing, this wine has hints of peach, apricot and a certain creaminess. Long and elegant finish, it is a wine with a strong personality. Enjoy at a temperature between 12ºC and 14ºC. Great to accompany a variety of starters, but reveals itself in its entirety when combined with fish and seafood dishes. Poultry dishes, traditionally difficult to harmonize, go well with this wine, which is also an excellent pair for cutting creamier sauces, for pasta and even some pork dishes. It has at least five years of custody potential.
