Chateau Musar is one of the most historic and dramatic projects (phylloxera, war and other diversities go through its history) in the wine universe. It started in the 1930s, after Gaston Hochar went to France to study medicine and fall in love with drinking. His friendship with Ronald Barton (Château Léoville Barton) brought a lot of influence, such as admiration for Cabernet Sauvignon and the style of keeping the wines of the region. His son Serge decided to follow in his footsteps, studied oenology in Bordeaux under master Emile Peynaud and continued his legacy for several decades. In his career, his distinguished talent was recognized by Decanter Magazine ‘Man of the Year’ in 1984, a position desired by many, achieved by a few.
In an era when natural wines became fashionable, Château Musar was one of the first to adhere to the minimum intervention philosophy in its production, many decades ago. Style of winemaking that remains today, since the beginning of the project: very low intervention in the cellar, use of wild yeasts, very little addition of sulfites and no filtering or bonding.
The vineyards are located in the Bekaa valley, around 200 km from the winery, which was built in Ghazir – a choice that sought safety in a troubled time of instability. The altitude of the vineyards in the mountains reaches 1300 meters, the constant sunshine and the stony soils on a limestone base shape the wines of this dramatic terroir. The cultivation is organic, certified since 2006, a natural choice in such an extreme climate.
Probably the most distinguished wines in the world. Highly individual, reflections of nature and a very strong personality. Wines that stand the test of time like few others. In reds, Cabernet Sauvignon predominates, and two solar varieties Carignan and Cinsault, which transform heat into freshness and elegance. With time in the bottle, they evoke the profile of a great Bordeaux.
